A truck driver and another person have been ambushed and killed by suspected hoodlums along the Ogor/Evwreni axis of the East-West Road in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.
Although details were sketchy, it was learnt that the victims, the driver and another, were attached to a truck belonging to a popular Nigerian businessman, which was conveying cement on an interstate journey, before they were killed over the weekend.
A source who spoke to newsmen disclosed that the corpses of the deceased were recovered and brought to the Ughelli Area Command before being taken to the morgue.
According to the source, the body of one of the deceased was mutilated, while the suspected driver’s hands were allegedly tied behind his back before they were killed. Their truckload of cement could not be located.
“For the past months, there have been incidents of killings and missing trucks loaded with cement. Over seven cases have been reported at the Ughelli Area Command. In reaction to the frequent occurrence, the Ughelli DPO, CSP Austin Duru, recently dispatched two patrol vehicles of security agents to the area,” the source said anonymously.
A road user, who lamented the series of unreported attacks on the road, appealed to the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, to deploy more patrol teams to the area.
“In the early hours of that day, we narrowly escaped from the dreaded hoodlums. We were going to the morning market when we noticed they had blocked the other side of the road coming from Port Harcourt,” the road user added.
