Scripture Anchor: “There is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.” Job 32:8
When King David prepared to hand over his throne to Solomon, he did not merely pass along political advice or financial reserves. Instead, he gave his son a divinely inspired blueprint for the temple, a pattern he had “by the Spirit” (1 Chronicles 28:12). This was no guesswork or product of human brilliance; David’s human spirit had been illuminated by the Spirit of God to receive heaven’s design.
This moment reveals a crucial truth: God communicates His will through a human spirit that is fully yielded to Him. While our minds and emotions can be active, it is the spirit of man, energized and enlightened by the Holy Spirit that serves as the channel for divine direction.
The Human Spirit as God’s Connection Point
Job makes it clear: “There is a spirit in man, and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.” Every person has the inner capacity to receive from God, but without training, the human spirit can remain weak, distracted, or insensitive.
In an age of constant noise, distractions, and overwhelming information, many believers risk missing God’s voice, not because He is silent, but because their spirit is untuned. Training the human spirit is therefore not optional; it is a necessity for anyone who desires lasting relevance in life and impactful service in God’s Kingdom.
It Begins With the New Birth
Before the human spirit can connect with the Spirit of God, it must be made alive through the new birth (John 3:3–6). Without being born again, a person’s spirit remains disconnected from God, no matter how moral or religious they may appear.
The new birth is a supernatural experience where God imparts His own life into our spirit, making us members of His family (Ephesians 2:19). This is the starting point. Without it, the human spirit is like an uncharged phone, designed to receive communication but unable to function.
Four Key Disciplines for Training the Human Spirit
- Meditate on God’s Word
Joshua 1:8 instructs us to meditate on God’s Word day and night. Meditation involves thinking deeply, speaking the Scriptures quietly to yourself, and personalizing them until they reshape your thoughts and attitudes.
When your mind and spirit are saturated with the Word, you become better equipped to recognize God’s voice and discern His leading. David could receive the temple’s design because his life and thinking were aligned with God’s truth.
- Practice the Word
James 1:22 warns us not to be hearers only but doers of the Word. Obedience sharpens discernment. Every time you act on God’s instructions, whether forgiving someone, helping the needy, or making a righteous choice—you strengthen your spirit’s ability to respond instantly to God.
- Respond Instantly to the Spirit’s Promptings
Often, the Holy Spirit guides us through gentle nudges—an urge to pray for someone, avoid a particular decision, or take a specific action. Quick obedience keeps the communication line clear; ignoring or delaying response dulls spiritual hearing.
- Pray in the Spirit
Jude 20 encourages us to build ourselves up by praying in the Holy Spirit—whether in tongues or with Spirit-led understanding. This type of prayer recharges our spiritual batteries, aligns us with God’s purposes, and keeps our inner man alert.
Why This Training Matters Beyond the Church
Some assume that training the human spirit is only for pastors or missionaries. This is far from the truth. The Spirit of God wants to give you insight for business decisions, wisdom for family matters, and creativity for solving community problems.
The blueprint God gave David was for a temple, but He can give you blueprints for your career, ministry, or any God-assigned project. A trained human spirit makes you relevant in the marketplace and impactful in the Kingdom.
Guarding the Spirit You’ve Trained
Training the spirit also means protecting it from contamination. Proverbs 4:23 advises, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” Avoid bitterness, unforgiveness, and moral compromise—they clog your spiritual channels and distort your ability to hear God clearly.
Living as a Spirit-Trained Believer
Imagine a believer whose spirit is continually fed with God’s Word, quick to obey the Spirit’s promptings, persistent in prayer, and alert to divine opportunities. Such a person will not only hear God’s voice but will also act on it in ways that transform the world around them.
David’s life reminds us that spiritual architecture is just as real as physical architecture. If we train our spirits, God will entrust us with patterns, strategies, and assignments that will outlive us.
Final Call
The world urgently needs men and women who live by heaven’s blueprints. These blueprints are not accessed through clever reasoning or emotional impulse, but through a human spirit in constant fellowship with the Holy Spirit.
If you are born again, start today to meditate on the Word, practice it diligently, obey the Spirit instantly, and pray consistently. Guard your spirit from anything that weakens it. Remember: the same God who gave David a pattern for the temple can give you divine strategies for your life’s mission.
