Soroptimist International Installs Onwumah As 14th President

IN a passionate call to action for the advancement of women and girl-child , Mrs. Uche Onwumah has urged stakeholders at all levels to sup­port initiatives focused on education, empowerment, and enabling oppor­tunities for women and the girl-child.

She made the appeal during her of­ficial installation as the 14th President of Soroptimist International, Asaba, at a well-attended ceremony held at Lambertian Hotel, Asaba.

Mrs. Onwumah, who underscored the vital role of Soroptimist Interna­tional; the world’s largest and oldest women-led service organization, in uplifting the underprivileged and advancing the status of women and girls globally. With over 500,000 members worldwide, the organization is dedicated to transformative service projects that empower women in management, leadership, and profes­sional fields.

During her acceptance speech, Mrs. Onwumah unveiled her agenda for the 2024–2026 biennium, which includes A Reading Action Programme Compe­tition for girls in junior high school; Cervical Cancer Screening for indigent women; Awareness Campaigns on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV); A Widows’ Empowerment Program aimed at promoting self-sufficiency and economic viability

“These vital initiatives directly address pressing needs and offer practical, sustainable solutions,” she said. “As we envision a world where every woman and girl can reach her full potential, I call on all stakeholders to collaborate with us through educa­tion, empowerment, and meaningful support.”

Speaking at the event, Delta State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Girl Child Development, Orode Uduaghan, who was also in­ducted as a member of Soroptimist International, expressed her admira­tion for the organization’s mission.

“It was inspiring to connect with so many phenomenal women united by a shared goal—empowering women and girls through education, opportunity, and service,” she said, pledging her ministry’s support and partnership.

The Chairman of the occasion, Rtn. Andy Uwejeyan, emphasized the central role of women in society, de­scribing them as the “bedrock of every home.” He encouraged the new presi­dent to continue strengthening the organization as a safe and empowering space for women.

In her remarks, Chairperson of the Planning Committee, Mrs. Catherine Ikemefuna, stated that the installation ceremony aims to deepen collabora­tion with NGOs committed to improv­ing the lives of women and girls. She highlighted the event’s potential to foster meaningful networking and new partnerships.

Mrs. Ikemefuna also commended the organizing committee for their dedication and hard work in deliver­ing a successful and impactful event.

Highlight of the event was the induc­tion of honourary members, Award presentation, and Raffle draw.
