The Agbor Area Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has organized a campaign in observance of the 2025 United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Possession and Trafficking.
The awareness campaign was part of a week-long series of programs aimed at eliminating hard drugs in Agbor Kingdom and its surrounding communities.
Speaking with journalists, the Assistant Commander of Narcotics (ACN) at the NDLEA Agbor Area Command, Mohammed Bello, said the primary objective of the exercise was to educate the public on the dangers of drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking.
According to him, “The annual World Drug Day is an occasion set aside globally to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse. It originated from the United Nations. Drug abuse is prevalent in Agbor and its surroundings, making campaigns like this an essential preventive measure’’.
Bello reiterated that the agency is committed to robust awareness initiatives that would help change the current narrative on drug abuse. He urged the youth of Ika ethnic nationality and residents of the area to refrain from the use of hard drugs. “I cannot envision a place like Ika nation having a high number of drug addicts and dealers. We have made numerous arrests and prosecutions since we resumed our duties in August last year, following the special request of the Dein of Agbor, hrm Benjamin Keagborekuzi. What we need is information to minimize drug abuse in Agbor Kingdom and the entire Ika nation.
‘’To achieve a drug-free in Agbor and Ika land, we require the support of residents and indigenes to report the locations of drug dealers and consumers. Rest assured, any information provided to us will remain confidential,” he promised.
He further advised drug dealers in Agbor to turn to legitimate business practices, warning that anyone caught would be made to face the full consequences of the law.
The Deputy Area Commander of the NDLEA, Agbor Area Command, Isaac Azuka, remarked that World Drug Day was specially designated by the United Nations to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and illicit transactions.
Others who spoke during the exercise included Chief Sunday Ibude, the commander of the Agbor Gha-Ihun Vigilante, who attended the campaign rally with his team, expressed gratitude to the Dein of Agbor Kingdom for his initiative in bringing the NDLEA to Agbor to protect the youth and the Kingdom from the used of hard drugs syndrome.
