UNIDENTIFIED gunmen have attacked the Amesi community in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, destroying its town hall, setting cars ablaze, and killing one person.
The incident, which happened over the weekend, marks the first time in a long while that criminals have struck in the state, following the security measures put in place by the Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo.
During the morning attack, members of the community described scenes of chaos as the assailants stormed the hall, burning at least three vehicles, and two motorcycles, and firing sporadically.
At the time of filing this report, the identity of the slain victim had not yet been officially released.
A governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and member of the community, Mr Valentine Ozigbo, who inspected the damage, called on the state governor to come to their aid.
He said: “Anambra is still bleeding. Our towns, our villages, and our people still live under the shadow of fear. We must listen. And we must act.”
Another resident, who asked not to be named for fear of reprisal, said: “This cannot continue. We deserve to sleep without fear. We deserve leaders who will fight for our safety, not merely manage our pain.”
