THE Gospel without Words Foundation has organized the first stage of a science competition for students of Owa- Oyibu Secondary School and Owa Alizomor Secondary School, both in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State, in honour of Sir and Lady H. O. Okwuokenye.
Speaking at the preliminary stage of the competition, the Director of Science Education in the Delta State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs. Hope Igumbor, said that the essence of the competition was to immortalize their late parents.
According to Igumbor, their parents were lovers of sciences and education in general, adding that since the burial ceremony of their mother was coming up, she and her siblings decided to organize the competition.
She added that the competition was for secondary schools in the two communities, noting that their mother hailed from Owa Alizomor, while their father hailed from Owa-Oyibu. While saying that the science competition would be sustained to become a scholarship scheme, Igumbor explained that the competition was also aimed at encouraging the reading culture among students in the two communities.
Igumbor decried poor reading culture among students nowadays and reminded them that education is the best path to success in life, just as she admonished them to take their studies seriously.
She said that awards would be given to the best three candidates at the end of the competition, assuring that they would select some students based on their performance and register them for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
