BY ESE OBOTE-OGWU

DELTA State Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr. Sonny Ekedayen has stressed that statisticians play a crucial role in driving economic growth, through accurate data for policy and decision-making across sectors.

Ekedayen made the statement when he received members of the Chartered Institute of Statisticians of Nigeria in Asaba.

He said that “statisticians are essential to the state’s economy and that is why our governor has given the approval for our state to host the planned international conference by the institute.”

“A successful conference is our top priority, and my team and I will be working closely with you to achieve this goal. With a week-long programme being planned, we’re committed to making your stay in our state a memorable one.” The commissioner applauded the team for their remarkable commitment to ensuring statisticians continue to play a crucial role in driving the economy.

Earlier, the President of Chartered Institute of Statisticians of Nigeria (CISON), Mr.  Godday Ebuh stated that their visit was to strengthen their relationship and to remind Ekedayen of the international conference in September 2025, as well as seeking his support to ensure its success.

Ebuh lauded Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s outstanding leadership abilities, which have been instrumental in driving growth and development in the state and have earned him widespread recognition.

The president gave a brief history of the institute and pointed out that the mission of the institute include statistical literacy and capacity building.

Ebuh  expressed optimism  that Delta State would host a successful conference. A highpoint of the visit was the decoration of the commissioner for economic planning by the Institute.
