…Says Waste Mgt Board Will Not Spare Offenders
In a bid to ensure a clean and healthy environment, the Delta State Waste Management Board, led by its Chairman, Mr. Mofe Edema, has commenced the clearing of illegal dump sites in Asaba, the state capital, and its environs.
The Board mobilized labourers and a bulldozer to clear refuse from the roadsides, while waste collection trucks were strategically positioned to evacuate accumulated waste.
Mr. Edema, accompanied by Board member Mr. Cosmas Igbenije and the Director of Operations, Mr. Micheal Esegba, inspected the ongoing work at various locations including Opposite the Airport, Koka Junction, and St. Bridgets Road. At Koka Junction, the Supervisor of the Asaba Field Office of the Delta State Waste Management Board, Mrs. Evelyn Orisewezie, was on ground to oversee operations.
Speaking during the exercise, the Chairman explained that the clean-up became necessary due to the alarming level of illegal dumping in several areas. He noted that such practices tarnish the image of the Board and endanger public health.
Mr. Edema expressed disappointment at the persistent illegal disposal of waste by some residents and even industries, stressing that dumping refuse in unauthorized places poses serious risks to lives and the environment.
He appealed to residents to register with Private Sector Participants (PSPs) who work directly with the Board. He further urged residents to promptly report any PSP operators who fail to carry out their duties effectively.
The Chairman highlighted the Board’s continued collaboration with other ministries to keep Delta State clean, and called on residents to join hands with the state government to maintain a healthy environment. He emphasized ongoing sensitization efforts in communities to raise awareness, noting that environmental cleanliness is a collective responsibility.
Mr. Edema expressed gratitude to the State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for his continuous support, stating that effective waste management would be impossible without adequate funding.
He warned individuals and groups involved in illegal dumping to desist, adding that the Taskforce has been mandated to arrest and prosecute offenders in accordance with environmental laws.
