THE Delta State Government has commenced discussions with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to prepare for the full transition to Computer-Based Test (CBT) examinations by 2026, in line with the Federal Government’s directive for all national examinations to go digital.
The Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr. Daniel Odigie, led a delegation from the ministry to WAEC’s office in Asaba to seek clarifications on the new examination framework and explore areas of collaboration to ensure smooth implementation across the state.
Odigie explained that the visit was part of efforts to align the state with the Federal Government’s education technology roadmap, noting that a phased rollout plan was being developed for the installation of ICT infrastructure in public schools. “Delta State has about 475 public secondary schools, and while it might not be feasible to equip all at once, the government plans to implement the project in phases,” he said. “Each center will be equipped with power backup, CCTV surveillance, internet connectivity, and cooling systems to ensure secure and uninterrupted examination conditions.”
In his response, WAEC Branch Controller, Mr. Oladele O. E., confirmed that the CBT directive originated from the Federal Ministry of Education and international examination bodies to standardize digital assessments across West Africa.
He added that WAEC has kick-started internal preparations to meet the 2026 target, assuring that the CBT system would function both online and offline to prevent breaches and maintain examination integrity. Mr. Oladele also suggested that private schools and JAMB accredited centers with existing facilities could serve as partners, especially in rural areas.
Both parties agreed to continue technical consultations, with WAEC expected to submit a detailed proposal to the Delta State Ministry of Science and Technology for review.
Odigie reaffirmed the state government’s readiness to support the digital transition, describing it as a major step toward modernizing examinations and improving educational outcomes across Delta State.
