Delta Organizes Training Workshop On State GDP

THE Department of Statistics, Delta State Ministry of Economic Planning, in collaboration with the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), today commenced a two-day training workshop on Delta State Gross Domestic Product (GDP), holding at Prof. Chike Edozien Secretariat, Asaba.

Welcoming the participants on behalf of the Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr. Sonny Ekedayen, the State Director of Statistics, Nkechi Maduemezia urged the statisticians to use the opportunity provided by the training to prepare themselves for the task of collecting accurate and reliable data towards the compilation of the state’s GDP.

Maduemezia urged the statisticians to take the training very seriously, listen attentively and ask questions for a better understanding of what it takes to compile an accurate and reliable GDP for the state, adding that it would enhance the current implementation of the MORE Agenda of His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, the Executive Governor of Delta State. The first lecture was delivered by Egede Nkechi Ethel, Asst. Chief Statistician at the NBS, who drilled the participants on topics, such as “Introduction to State GDP”, concluding that estimating the SGDP has become necessary, requires intentional efforts and continuous improvement.

Next, another staff of the NBS, Mr. Ngwee Bartholomew Chukwuka took the participants on “State GDP Computational Methodology”. The course outline included SGDP computational methods and data requirement, approaches of state GVA compilation, borderline issues and allocation of GVA by industries in current prices.

On the framework for the SGDP, Ngwee told the participants that when in doubt, they should always consult the System of National Accounts (SNA) 2008 and other vital documents, such as the International Standard Manual for SGDP, International Standard Industrial Classification of Economic Activities (SIC) 4.0, Central Product Classification (CPC) 2.0, Balance of Payment Manual, Version 6 and Government Finance Statisticians Manual 2014.

The training workshop continues today at the same venue.
