GOV. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has advised farmers to adhere to the Nigeria Meteorological Agency’s (NiMet) first-hand information on flood alerts to save their investments, particularly in flood-prone areas.
He gave the advice yesterday when he led a delegation to commiserate with fish farmers at Camp 74, Asaba, over the loss of their fish to flood, occasioned by recent downpour in the area.
Our correspondent reports that the farmers lost their fishes following recent heavy rainfall, which was predicted by NiMet.
Represented by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr. Val Arenyeka, the governor, however, assured them of government’s support and promised to send officials to ascertain the extent of damage.
He described the incident as a disaster, and cautioned them to “always follow NiMet first-hand information on flood alerts, so as to save your investments.
“Agriculture remains a priority and government would not abandon farmers, but would do anything within its powers to assist them.”
He also urged the farmers to embrace technology, listen to the radio to be abreast with weather forecasts to avoid losses.
The governor, however, lauded the Camp 74 fish farmers for engaging in acqua-culture, adding that they should not be discouraged by the present challenge.
The Camp 74 fish farmers thanked the state government for commiserating with them.
