Delta HOS Tasks Doctors On Highest Ethical Conduct

MEDICAL Doctors in Delta State have been encouraged to adhere to the ethics of the medical profession and the Public Service Rules to advance the delivery of qualitative health care services in the State.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference, organised by the Nigerian Medical Association, Delta State Branch in Asaba, the Head of Service, Dr. (Mrs.) Mininim Oseji expressed appreciation to the NMA for the honour bestowed on her.

To demonstrate her appreciation for the role of NMA in her career progression, she disclosed that an award of Delta State Physician of the Year for 2025 and 2026 had been instituted by her.

The HOS said the award was in recognition of physicians who have displayed outstanding qualities of an ideal medical doctor. The award, according to her, would come with a certificate and would attract a cash prize of N250,000 yearly to be presented at the Annual General Meeting.

Quoting the Mission and Vision Statements of the NMA, she reminded members to engage themselves in professional development, advocacy, knowledge management, and public education, as such action will help foster effective and efficient health care delivery in the State.

The Conference, which attracted several dignitaries, had the theme “Improving Access to Affordable and Quality Healthcare through Innovative Contributory Health Insurance Scheme: The Success Story of DSCHC.”

Reflecting on the vision of the Delta State Contributory Health Commission, the Keynote Speaker, Dr Isaac Akpoveta, who is the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, maintained that every resident of Delta State must have access to quality and affordable health care without financial difficulties.

He added that the Commission also ensures that the Health Scheme stands on equity, efficiency, and innovation, and these pillars make it possible for people to have access to quality health care irrespective of their social status or background.

According to Dr Akpoveta, “the poor must be looked after by the rich.” He further encouraged others in the Medical Profession to invest in the Scheme as contributions are based on the ability to pay more, while accessing health care is based on needs.

He emphasised that their role as Medical Professionals is to uphold the highest quality health care delivery so that Deltans can access the care that they need without financial difficulties.

Other Speakers were Dr. Israel Adaigho, Chairman of NMA, and Dr. Akponana Mudiaga, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Dr. Ovie Albert, Associate Professor, University of Calgary, as well as Mr. Johnson Idoghor, Assistant Director of Cooperatives, Delta State.
