THE Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty, Prof. Epiphany Azinge SAN alongside the Chairman of Oshimili South Local Government Area, Hon. Kelvin Ezenyili, has laid the foundation stone for the construction of an ultra-modern cemetery.
Speaking at the occasion, the Asagba of Asaba expressed gratitude to the local government council for taking the bold step towards urban development. He described the project as timely and essential, noting that its completion would put an end to the health hazards associated with burying the dead within residential areas.
The revered monarch announced his intention to ban residential burials in Asaba upon the completion of the cemetery, which he expressed optimism would be ready within six months.
Meanwhile, the Local Government Chairman, Hon. Ezenyili, described the project as a dream come true, noting that the idea of establishing a befitting cemetery in Asaba had been a long-standing desire dating back to his first tenure as Chairman.
He recalled that the Asagba of Asaba had also emphasised the importance of such a facility during a courtesy visit when he served as Okilolo Asaba.
According to him, “A cemetery is a designated area for the burial and memorialization of deceased individuals. Its primary function is to serve as a final resting place for human remains while providing a serene space for the living to remember and honour their loved ones.”
Ezenyili highlighted that Asaba, being the capital of Delta State and an emerging urban centre, deserves a modern cemetery due to its growing population and limited land space within traditional quarters for burials.
He further explained that beyond addressing cultural and health concerns, the project would generate revenue for the council and create job opportunities for residents of Oshimili South.
The ultra-modern cemetery, sitting on three acres of land at Ogbeilo Village, Umuonaje Quarters, will feature an administrative office, event centre, chapel, 350 vault units, digital record-keeping system, CCTV surveillance, perimeter fencing, drainage system, landscaped walkways, parking areas, and a green lawn environment.
In his remarks, the Onwa of Asaba and former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Peter Onwusanya lauded the Chairman and the Asagba for their vision and commitment. He commended Ezenyili for setting a high standard in governance, urging future leaders to build on his legacy.
The groundbreaking ceremony marks a major milestone in Asaba’s urban development plan, positioning Oshimili South as a model in environmental and public health management.
The event witnessed the presence of the Vice Chairperson, Hon. Mrs Chinye Hobobo Uso, the Leader of the Legislative Arm, Ogbueshi Michael Okonji, Councillors, Palace Chiefs, Advisory Council members, political stakeholders, including Ogbueshi Dada Okolo, the APC Chairman in Oshimili South, staff of the council, and youth groups.
