Delta, Bayelsa Lawmakers Strengthening Bond Through Sports, Legislative Engagements

Delta and Bayelsa states, for the records, are among the Six states that make up the BRACED States (Bayelsa, Rivera, Akwa-Ibom, Cross River, Edo and, Delta) Among the States, Bayelsa and Delta States have a complex relationship, shaped by their shared history, cultural ties, and geographical proximity.

Interestingly, both states are part of the Niger Delta region and have significant oil reserves, which has led to economic and environmental challenges.

In the area of cultural and Historical Ties, the Ijaw people, who are indigenous to both states, have strong cultural and historical connections.

It is a known fact that Many communities in Bayelsa have Delta-born Ijaws in positions of trust, and some Delta Ijaw leaders fought for the creation of Bayelsa State

However, the two states have in the past, experienced boundary disputes and communal clashes, particularly in areas with oil resources. In 2022, Bayelsa called for the National Boundary Commission to resolve the dispute with Rivers State, while Delta and Bayelsa have also have tensions over boundary issues.

Despite these challenges, however, there are efforts to promote economic cooperation in both states.  The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has partnered with the Chamber of Commerce to drive economic development in the region, including Delta and Bayelsa. In the area of security, the region has also faced security challenges, including militancy, cultism, and oil theft. These issues have impacted the livelihoods of communities in both states.

Beyond these, however, both states have continued to live as Siamese twins; sharing things in common.

In the recent past, Delta Delta State had continued to play host to Bayelsa State legislators who see the State as the most preferred States for its legislative retreats and engagements.

In 2025 for instance, the Bayelsa State legislators were in Delta in more than two occasions for its routine legislative retreats.

In one of such retreats, The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly (DTHA), Rt Hon Emomotimi Guwor while addressing the Bayelsa lawmakers,  stressed the need for Stakeholders in the Oil-producing States in the country to be more united towards protecting their environment, culture and value system.

Speaking in his goodwill message at the Five Day retreat by the Bayelsa lawmakers, Rt. Hon. Guwor commended the Bayelsa lawmakers for chosing Delta as venue of the retreat.

He emphasized the deep historical, cultural and economic ties that bind the two states, noting shared challenges such as environmental pollution and the need for sustainable development.

“The Bayelsa and Delta are more than neighbours; we are family. We share a tapestry of history, culture, food, festivals, and the same environmental and developmental challenges. As oil producing states, we must work together to protect our people and our land”, Guwor said.

The Speaker described the theme of the retreat “Leadership, Stakeholder Management, and Socio economic Growth in Bayelsa State,” as timely and relevant to the everyday realities in their various constituencies.

He expressed confidence that the retreat would provide fresh perspectives and enhance the legislators’ capacity to deliver effective governance.

Guwor also highlighted the importance of inter legislative partnership, stating that collaboration on environmental protection, resource governance and economic opportunities could yield greater results for both states. He extended a warm invitation to the Bayelsa delegation to explore Delta and to engage fully in the retreat’s sessions.

The Speaker of Bayelsa State House of Assembly Rt  Hon Abraham  Ingobere, commended the warm reception always accorded members in Delta State, underscoring a growing tradition of mutual exchange of ideas for development between the two states.

Meanwhile, beyond the legislative retreats, the bond between the two States grows stronger by the minutes. Only recently, lawmakers from both states engaged each other in a Novelty Football Match in Warri, Delta State, to celebrate the 50th birthday anniversary of Mathew Tonlagha, Chairman, Maton Engineering Nigeria Limited.

The event, no doubt, was a testament to Tonlagha’s impact in the Niger Delta region, with both Speakers, Rt Hon Emomotimi Dennis Guwor (Delta) and Rt Hon Abraham Ingobere (Bayelsa), serving as Captains for their respective teams.

The novelty football match, played at the Edjeba premises of SPDC, was witnessed by top government functionaries, friends and associates of the celebrant, and a cream  of sports enthusiasts across Bayelsa and Delta states, including the Speakers of Anambra and Edo State Houses of Assembly, Rt Hon Somtochukwu Udeze and Rt Hon Blessing Agbomian.

The fun-filled football tournament ended 5-3 on penalty in favour of the visiting Bayelsa State House of Assembly.

Speaking in separate interviews, the two Speakers expressed delight at having to  honoured Mathew Tonlagha, a man they described as a pride of Niger Delta and philanthropist par excellence.

The wife of the celebrant, Mrs Esther Tonlagha expressed gratitude for the honour done her husband by the two States Houses of Assembly.

She pointed out that attaining the golden age of 50 is a significant milestone, disclosing that the novelty match was part of a larger celebration of the birthday anniversary.
