INDUCTEES into the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) have pledged to uphold the highest standards of responsible journalism, defend press freedom and promote national cohesion to strengthen the nation’s democracy.
They made the commitment at the 2025 NGE general conference held in Abuja, the first ever attended by a sitting President, where 17 inductees were received into the prestigious body.
The induc tees inc luded the General Manager of Delta Printing and Publishing Corporation (DPPC), publisher of The Pointer Newspaper, Mrs. Rosemary Nwaebuni, Sunday Areh (Managing Editor, The Southerner), Abioye Kennedy (Editor, Punch), Lilian Onyegule (Director-General, Imo Broadcasting Corporation), Jubrin Ndace (Director-General, Voice of Nigeria), Chinemenma Umeseaka (General Manager, Universal Television Africa), Constance Ikokwu (Arise News) and Samson Folarin (Weekend Editor, Punch).
Others were the Director-General of Ebonyi Broadcasting Corporation, Anthony Nwizi, Jenkins Alumona (online publisher), Okah-Jonah Ibifuro of Bayelsa Broadcasting Corporation, Fagbule Francis (Editor, Businessday), Umoetuk Florence of the Akwa Ibom Broadcasting Corporation and Bamidele Johnson (managing editor of an online platform).
Also, Omale Samson of Silverbird Television, Simon Igwe-Iroh of the Ebonyi Broadcasting Corporation and Chioma Ugboma of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) were among those who subscribed to relevant oaths of the NGE, administered by Femi Adesina.
Furthermore, the NGE inducted six distinguished members into its College of Fellows, Arinze Azuh, Casmir Igbokwe, Ephraims Sheyin, Dr. Amanze Obi, Dr. Suleiman Sule and Chief Ken Njoku. While taking the oath of allegiance, the new inductees, having been found worthy to be members of the Guild, pledged to be faithful and loyal to the NGE and to abide by its code of conduct.
They fur ther pledged thei r commitment to accuracy, fairness and integrity and that they will not engage in practices capable of lowering expected standards of the NGE or the journalism profession.
Following her induction into the prestigious body, Mrs. Nwaebuni expressed gratitude to God for His mercies and protection throughout her illustrious journalism career, during which she steadily rose through to the pinnacle of the profession.
She commended Del ta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for trusting her to lead the state-owned print media outfit, just as she thanked the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, for his efforts in repositioning the state’s information machinery in line with the MORE Agenda.
Until her appointment as General Manager, Nwaebuni, a graduate of Mass Communication, Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, served as Political Editor, Deputy Editor, Saturday Editor, among others.
