World Teachers’ Day: NUT Sets To Honour Gov Oborevwori

By Osita Biose

As Delta State gets set to join the global community tomorrow, to celebrate this year’s World Teachers’ Day, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in the state, has said it will honour the State Governor, Rt. (Hon.) Sheriff Oborevwori as part of programmes to mark the yearly event.

“This is in recognition of the governor’s remarkable contributions to the development and advancement of education at the primary and secondary school levels.    The honour would be a distinguished Award on the governor for his teacher-friendly disposition”, a statement said.

The state wing of the NUT added that the Oborevwori administration is making significant strides in the development of education, including better welfare for teachers.

The union mentioned the upgrade of vital infrastructure in schools, payment of promotion arrears, upgrade of secondary school teachers to Salary Grade Level 17 and awards of excellence in recognition of their commitment and professionalism.

“More exciting was the fact that this year’s celebration marks the first time Delta State will be commemorating the global event under the leadership of a newly elected NUT state chairman, Comrade Dickson Poubeni, who took over from Comrade Titus Okotie, who served two terms.

According to the State Secretary, Comrade Dan Basime, “numerous exciting activities, such as award ceremony, speech making, music and cultural displays, have been lined up for the day by the teaching community.

He appealed to the government and stakeholders to continue to motivate teachers, by providing necessary resources, regular training and better environment, saying that “it behoves on  teachers to key into the theme of this year’s celebration, “Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession”.

He said that this underpins the importance of team work and collaboration among educators, adding that it will help boost teaching quality, foster a culture of peer group support and needs assessment of students towards the overall improvement of the education system.

The NUT, he said, is optimistic about the celebration, while he appreciated the support of key officials in the state, including the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu and Commissioner for Primary Education, Dr. Kingsley Ashibogwu, among others.
