I Wanted To Fit In

I came from a modest background, but in university, I tried to keep up with my flashy friends. I borrowed expensive clothes, lied about my lifestyle, and dated older men for money.

It all started in my 100-level when I met Precious, a classy and well-known student, who advised me to stop attending lectures.

I listened to her and abandoned everything my parents had taught me. I even paid fellow students to write my quizzes and exams.

After three years in school, I fell ill. At the hospital, I was diagnosed HIV-positive.

Now, with only one year left to graduate, the rumour has spread through the entire campus, and I have lost all my friends. Faith

Dear Faith,

HIV is not the end of your life. Yes, you made mistakes, but your story does not stop here. The first step is to forgive yourself. Self-condemnation will only hold you back. Speak openly with your parents and seek their support; you will need their love and guidance now more than ever.

Most importantly, get on treatment immediately and stay consistent with your medications.

With proper care, people living with HIV live long, healthy, and fulfilling lives. Protect your health and protect others by being responsible.

Do not allow shame or gossip to destroy your future.

Many people who once thought their lives were over have risen above their past and built inspiring new beginnings, and I know you can too.

Surround yourself with positive people, focus on finishing your education, and commit to making wiser choices going forward.

Remember: your diagnosis is part of your story, but it is not your identity. You still have dreams to chase, a purpose to fulfil, and a life worth living. Be strong.

and school life. Carry it as a lesson, not as a label.

One mistake does not define your future, and even if there’s a setback, it doesn’t mean the end of your academic journey.

Hold your head high, be prayerful, and prepare yourself mentally to keep moving forward.
