THE peaceful community of Ute-Okpu in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State, was thrown into distress and panic following a heavy downpour which led to severe flooding that displaced dozens of residents from their homes.
The torrential rainfall, which lasted several hours, overwhelmed drainage systems and caused water to surge into homes, farmlands and roads, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
Our correspondent gathered after the incident during a visit to the area witnessed first hand the heartbreak and confusion of how some families were forced to abandon their homes and belongings in search for shelter.
According to eyewitness accounts, several homes were completely submerged, while others had their foundations weakened by the floodwaters. Some residents were seen trying to salvage few belongings including mattresses, clothing, cooking utensils that were totally soaked and damaged.
According to an eye witness, “it was like a nightmare. The water rushed in so fast, we barely had time to get our children out. Everything we’ve worked for is gone”.
Community leaders in Ute-Okpu have described the incident as one of the worst in recent memory. “We are not just dealing with flooding; we are dealing with displaced families, destroyed livelihoods, and a community in trauma. Many of our people have nowhere to sleep tonight, and food is already becoming a problem”,. another source said.
