THE Delta State Government has issued a stern warning to all commercial tricycle operators, popularly known as Keke riders, restricting their operations during late-night hours in key towns across the state.
In a directive announced by the Director-General of the Delta State Traffic Management Authority (DESTMA), Hon. Benjamin Okiemute, tricycle riders in Warri, Ughelli, Udu, Sapele, and other major towns must cease operations by 10:00 p.m .daily, effective from July 1.
According to Okiemute, the move is part of ongoing efforts to improve public safety and reduce the increasing number of night-time crimes involving commercial vehicles.
In addition to the law, Okiemute outlined further regulations for tricycle and motorcycle operators.
‘’Tricycles are no longer permitted to use extensions or carry loads on or behind the vehicle. Operators must also remove door covers to allow security personnel better visibility of passengers.’’
He also noted that commercial motorcycle (okada) riders, as well as their passengers, must wear helmets and not carry more than one passenger at a time. While some commuters are concerned about reduced transportation options at night, others believe the regulations will enhance security and reduce crime in affected areas.
The Delta State Government has urged all operators to comply with the new rules, warning that violators will face the mobile court and, if found guilty, will be sentenced to six months in prison. Residents are encouraged to plan their movements accordingly and cooperate with DESTMA security agencies to ensure the safety of all.
