In the sleepy town of Ughelli, nestled amidst the lush vegetation of Delta State, a different kind of bustle was underway. The town’s motorbike network, leadership hub, and commercial centre were alive with activity as delegates from across the state converged for the 9th Quadrennial Delegate Conference of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Delta State Wing.
Governor Oborevwori’s Charge
At the occasion, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori lauded teachers for their unwavering commitment to shaping the future of society.
Speaking through the State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs Rose Ezewu, he underscored the vital importance of motivating teachers to ensure educational excellence.
He stated, “Distinguished guests, esteemed educators, and fellow citizens, I am honoured to be part of this gathering of true nation-builders, educators who shape the future of our society. The theme of this conference, ‘Motivation of Teachers: A Panacea for Improving Educational Standards,’ is both apt and timely.
“As a government, we are committed to your welfare and to the advancement of education in Delta State. We have employed over 2,000 teachers, provided school buildings, ensured timely promotions, and improved working conditions. Yet, we recognise that good facilities and incentives must be complemented by continuous professional development.”
The Governor further encouraged teachers to keep learning and upgrading their skills to meet the demands of today’s fast-changing world.
“We will continue to support innovation, research, and entrepreneurship to prepare our students for the future. As Nelson Mandela once said, ‘Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.’ You hold this weapon, and my administration will continue to empower you in this mission.
“I commend the Nigeria Union of Teachers, led by Comrade Titus Okotie, for partnering with us to improve our educational system. This collaboration is essential to building an inclusive and forward-looking sector,” Oborevwori added.
He went on to wish participants fruitful discussions and expressed optimism that the conference would yield outcomes that strengthen education across the state.
Teacher’s Motivation, Economic Necessity– Dr Odor
Dr Hilary Odor delivered a compelling lecture at the conference, focusing on “Revolutionising Education through Teacher Motivation.”
He emphasised that motivated teachers are pivotal to educational excellence and improving student outcomes.
According to him, “Teacher motivation is not just a moral imperative; it is an economic necessity. Motivated teachers are more productive, and their students perform better. We must recognise the value of teachers and provide them with the support and resources they need to excel.”
Dr Odor further highlighted that motivated teachers are more likely to create engaging and interactive learning environments, develop innovative teaching strategies, build strong relationships with students and colleagues, and stay abreast of best practices in their field.
Unite, Co-operate For Brighter Education Sector – Ashibogwu
Meanwhile, the state Commissioner for Primary Education, Dr Kingsley Ashibogwu delivered a goodwill message, congratulating the NUT Delta State Wing on the successful organisation of the conference.
He stressed the importance of unity and cooperation among teachers, commended the outgoing leadership for their service, and welcomed the new leadership while pledging support for their initiatives.
“I am honoured to bring goodwill messages to this esteemed gathering. I congratulate the NUT Delta State Wing on this momentous occasion. I urge all members to rally behind the new leadership and work towards a brighter future for our education sector,” he said.
Dickson Poubeni Succeeds Titus Okotie
In a smooth transition of leadership, Dickson Poubeni succeeded Titus Okotie as the new chairman of NUT Delta State.
In his acceptance speech, Poubeni thanked God for the opportunity and acknowledged the trust placed in him by the delegates.
He pledged to work tirelessly for the betterment of the union and the education sector, prioritising teacher welfare, promoting quality education, and strengthening the union.
As tradition dictates, Okotie, the immediate past chairman, will now become an automatic member of the State Working Committee (SWEC), receiving congratulations from delegates.
It was also noted that the next conference, in four years, will follow the zoning pattern and is expected to be held in Delta North.
Comrade Dan Basime delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to delegates, guests, and organisers. He commended the outgoing leadership for their dedication and service, and congratulated the new leadership on their emergence.
“On behalf of the NUT Delta State Wing, I express our deepest gratitude to all who contributed to the success of this conference. We thank our guests, delegates, and organisers for their tireless efforts.
“We also commend our outgoing leadership for their service and congratulate our new leadership on their emergence. May God bless us all and guide our endeavours,” he said.
