Okiemute Leads DESTMA’s Drive For Discipline Among Officers

BY JUMAI NWACHUKWU

In a major stride towards reforming and repositioning its workforce for improved service delivery and public confidence, the Delta State Traffic Management Authority (DESTMA) has organised a two-day internal training for officers of its Special Intelligence and Provost Units, aimed at strengthening discipline and professionalism within the agency.

Speaking at the flag-off of the training, the Director-General of DESTMA, Hon. Benjamin Okiemute, said the initiative was designed to ensure that officers not only enforce traffic laws but also embody integrity and high moral standards in their daily duties.

He stressed that effective enforcement begins with personal discipline, noting that the agency must “lead by example” to earn the trust and respect of road users.

According to Okiemute, Delta State has become the first in the country to train its officers to enforce traffic laws under the direct provisions of its enabling law, an achievement that underscores the state government’s commitment to building a credible, law-driven traffic management system that promotes order, safety, and respect for citizens’ rights.

He commended the participating officers for their dedication and urged them to apply the knowledge gained to enhance service delivery. He added that DESTMA’s ultimate goal is to minimise road accidents and traffic violations through a combination of education, enforcement, and collaboration with the motoring public.

Okiemute further reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to continuous capacity building and strengthening partnerships with security and transport agencies to ensure a safer, more efficient transport environment across Delta State.

A participant, who preferred to remain anonymous, lauded the DESTMA leadership for prioritising internal discipline, describing the initiative as “a bold and visionary step towards reforming public service from within.”

The training featured sessions on ethical conduct and discipline, conflict management, and self-accountability, equipping officers with tools to perform their duties with greater professionalism and to improve public perception of the agency.
