NPC Digitises Birth, Death Registration In Delta

BY PATRICK MGBODO

THE National Population Commission (NPC), today, launched the electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (eCRVS) system in Delta State, with manual registrations billed to end on March 1, 2026.

Flagging-off the ceremony in Asaba, the Federal Commissioner representing Delta State in the Commission, Hon (Mrs) Blessyn Brume-Ataguba, said the exercise reflects the commitment of President Bola Tinubu to strengthen civil registration data capturing, collation, processing, dissemination and access.

Giving a background of the exercise, Hon Brume-Ataguba said it was part of Nigeria’s compliance with the resolutions of the Conference of African Ministers responsible for CVRS, adding that it would also  help to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 16, 9 and 2.

‘’The launch of the digital Civil Registration and Vital Registration System is set to overhaul the entire process of registration of births and deaths, including laying a solid foundation for an efficient civil registration and vital statistics system.

‘’Our confidence is reinforced in the fact that over the years, the Commission has invested considerable time and resources planning for an improved digitisation process of vital events to give the nation a truly electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics data for socioeconomic planning,’’ she said.

The federal commissioner assured that all comptrollers in the 25 local government areas of the state would be equipped with the gadgets for the digitisation exercise, just as she beckoned on the state government for a stronger partnership.

Remarking, the state Director of the NPC, Mrs Jane Odiwe, said the Commission was working tirelessly at the grassroots to ensure that registration services were active in every local government area.

‘’Parents, the days of double stress are over. Once you register your child’s birth with us, the record flows automatically to generate a National Identification Number (NIN).

‘’When you receive that birth certificate, your child’s NIN is already printed on it. With one single action, you are securing your child’s identity for life. I want to use this opportunity to solicit the continued support of the Delta State Government. Your partnership is vital in helping us reach this goal.

‘’To every parent in Delta State, I urge you to bring your children forward for the birth certificate is not just a document, it is your child’s key to education, healthcare and global opportunities. By registering your child today, you are giving them a voice in the Nigeria of tomorrow’’ she said.

At the event, the state ICT lead (ECRVS), Mrs Jeremiah Erunube, explained the digitisation process and the self-service feature on the web platform. Also, the Head of Vital Registration, Mrs Mary Akiti and Sir Silvestre Evuarherhe urged the press to intensify efforts in circulating the message.
