Nigeria’s Population To Hit 350 Million By 2050 —World Bank

… Urges FG On Jobs To Match Rapid Growth

The World Bank has projected that Nigeria’s population could rise to about 350 million people by the year 2050, meaning the country may have around 130 million more people than it does today.

Nigeria currently has over 220 million inhabitants, making it the sixth most populous country in the world. The World Bank has urged the Federal Government to create more jobs to match the nation’s rapid population growth.

Speaking at the 2025 World Bank–IMF Annual Meetings, World Bank President Ajay Banga stressed that job creation must form a central part of every country’s development and security agenda.

He explained that by 2050, 85 per cent of the world’s population will live in developing countries, with Africa accounting for one in every four people on Earth.

According to Banga, about 1.2 billion young people are expected to enter the global workforce within the next 10 to 15 years, competing for just 400 million jobs, only one-third of what will be required.

“These young people have energy and great ideas. With the right investments, they can power the world’s future growth,” Banga said.
