Following the New Tax law in the country, the Delta State Government (DTSG) is set to repeal the Delta State Internal Revenue Service Law, 2020 and enact the Delta State Internal Revenue Service (Consolidated) Law, 2026.
The State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori dropped the hint, yesterday, as he sought for a Bill to repeal the law in the State.
The Governor’s intent was made known following a letter he forwarded to the State legislators for the purpose, which was read on the floor of the State Assembly by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor.
According to the State Governor, “The request is in pursuant to the coming into effect of the Nigeria Tax Act, 2025, Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act, 2025 and the Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Act, 2025 (Tax Reform Laws, 2025) and the need for the state revenue laws to be in consonance with these Tax Reform Laws.
He said,”As the Honourable House may be aware, the Tax Reform Laws, 2025 made far reaching reforms in the administration of taxes in Nigeria, and state Governments were directed by the Joint Revenue Board to domesticate some of these reforms for uniform administration of taxes in Nigeria. “In making this request, studies have been made on the Tax Reform Laws, 2025 and the Delta State Internal Revenue Service Law, 2020 for the purpose of identifying their areas of concurrence and divergence, in order to produce a single Law that contains all the relevant provisions of the Tax Reform Laws, 2025 as it pertains to the State, that not only meets the required expectations but acceptable to all concerned.
“Thus, the main purpose of consolidating the Delta State Internal Revenue Service Law, 2020 and the relevant provisions of the Tax Reform Laws, 2025 into a single Bill is to promote the ease of doing business in the State and ensure that all queries pertaining to tax and its administration in the State are answered in a single Law instead of in several laws as applicable in the Federation and in some States.
Underscoring the import of the proposed bill, the Governor said, “aligning the Delta State Tax Laws with the Federal Government’s Tax Reform Laws, 2025, will ensure uniformity, clarity, and efficiency in Nigeria’s tax system.
“It will also reduce multiple taxation, improve compliance, and strengthen revenue generation through modern administration and promote investor confidence for sustainable development” The bill which sailed through first reading on the floor of the House is scheduled for a Second reading on Wednesday, February 11, this year.
