For alleged official misconduct, the Delta State House of Assembly Committee on Health has directed the State Hospitals Management Board (HMB) to take appropriate disciplinary actions on a doctor and other health workers at the state’s Government Hospital, Olomoro in Isoko South local Government Area
The Chairman of the Committee, Hon Ferguson Onwo, who handed down the directive when he led other members of the committee on an oversight duty to the hospital, said it was sad to see patients suffer untold medical neglect despite government’s efforts in providing quality healthcare services in the state.
The culprits, according to Onwo, were said to have abandoned their duty posts, thereby leaving patients at the hospital unattended to.
Accompanied by other members of the committee, who included; Hon Bernard Odior, Festus Utuama and Mathew Omonade, Onwo stated that disciplinary action should be taken to serve as deterrent to those who indulge in such behavior in public service.
The lawmaker and his team, who were at the Central Hospital, Oleh, Government Hospital, Olomoro, Government Hospital, Ozoro and Central Hospital, Kwale, said the legislative assignment was aimed at obtaining firsthand information on prospects and challenges in the state health sector. The Health Committee Chairman, who represents Isoko South 2 Constituency in the House, expressed serious concern over the poor attitude to work by some care givers. He blamed the development on what he described as lack of monitoring and effective supervision by parent ministries, particularly the Ministry of Health as well as the Hospital Management Board (HMB).
The lawmaker commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for the recent recruitment of doctors and other health workers, as well as the upgrades and provision of health facilities in the sector.
The Chairman, Hospital Management Board, Dr Paul Oweh commended the Assembly Committee on Health for the visit, saying that the visit was timely as the board was committed to repositioning the health sector for better and quality service delivery, just as he assured that disciplinary measures would be carried out on erring officers of the board.
