DSTG Begins Drilling Of Boreholes In Ogwashi-Uku

AS part of the move to stem the rising water scarcity in Ogwashi-Uku metropolis, Delta State Government has commenced with the drilling of three boreholes in the community.

The boreholes drilling, which is currently under work, is located at the former Ogwashi-Uku water reservoir premises in Ogbe-Nti Obi, Umudei quarters.

Fact check indicates that the drilling of one of the mouth of the boreholes have been completed, while the second is also nearing completion. The project site houses a gigantic reservoir capable of housing over 10,000 liters of water when pumped.

Investigation revealed that the reservoir use to be the main source of water supply to all of Ogwashi-Uku metropolis in the days gone bye,  until the borehole broke down, a community source had divulged to our correspondent.

The source had further disclosed that the state government had in the past tried to revive the existing borehole serving the community after its initial breakdown, but the effort did not see the light of the day.

Hear our source who identified himself as Kingsley: “I think what the state government has decided to do by sinking a new borehole is just about the best decision so far.

“You will realize that the government has through various measures tried to fix the existing borehole, but it never succeeded.

“Each time they had tried, the effort never last long before it goes back to its failed state.

“Therefore, drilling a new borehole and not just one but three this time around is an indication that it means business. Indeed that it wants to supply water to the community.

“And indeed, this is what we expect of government to do. Even the local government supposed to provide the people with water through similar efforts, but this we hardly see.

“I want to believe that the drilling of the borehole will when completed and distributed round the metropolis, help to bring the scarcity of water in the metropolis to an end”, Kingsley said.

Recall that the United States AID otherwise known as UNAIDS had at the wake of early this year alongside side Mercy-Corps approved the restoration of the existing moribund Ogwashi-Uku water reservoir.

The project which was to be executed in collaboration with Delta State Government could not materialize following the withdraw of fund by the then newly sworn in president of America, Donald Trump from the donor agency.

Although sources within and outside the country had alleged that the organization was being used for terrorism financing, part of the reason which was said to have led to the withdrawal of resources to the agency.

Our source who is privy to the current arrangements towards restoration of the borehole, hinted that the project when completed will give water to the entire Ogwashi-Uku metropolis via its existing channels of distribution.
