The General Manager of the Delta Printing and Publishing Corporation (DPPC), publishers of The Pointer Newspaper, Mrs Rosemary Nwaebuni, has been honoured for excellence in journalism and leadership by the Advanced Management Academy, Abuja.
The award was presented at the 2026 International Women’s Day Conference organised by the Academy in Abuja and themed “Taking Action for Justice and Rights of Women and Girls.”
The event brought together academics, media professionals, and representatives of security and paramilitary agencies, including the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
Speaking on behalf of media practitioners and other awardees, Mrs Nwaebuni, while expressing gratitude for the award, pledged sustained commitment to people-centred journalism.
“By God’s grace, we will continue to do what we do, and we will not retreat from that responsibility. We will continue to remain a steadfast voice for the people and amplify the concerns of the ordinary citizen. We will continue to be a conscience of the society and ensure that truth is neither diluted nor suppressed.
In his presentation, the Chief Executive Officer of the academy, Dr Peter Oyeneye, called for a shift from rhetoric to measurable action in addressing barriers to justice for women and girls.
“There is a need to drive action towards anything that hampers the justice of women and girls. Education is key; we must educate boys about girls and girls about boys,” he said, stressing that both government and citizens must ensure accountability.
He urged citizens to complement the media by speaking out and leveraging digital platforms to demand justice, warning against stereotypes that undermine women’s rights. In a presentation titled “10 Action Steps to Challenge Injustice,” Mrs Mercy Eluemunor emphasised breaking the culture of silence.
“There is a need to speak up and report abuse to NGOs and trusted authorities. Silence enables injustice,” she said, urging women to build support networks and engage law enforcement within legal limits.
She also highlighted the role of traditional and religious leaders in resolving abuse cases.
Other speakers included Mr Godwin Unguaga, who addressed youth engagement on social media, and Mrs Lizzy Asomugha, who encouraged women’s political participation.
A total of 23 female professionals across media, academia and public service were honoured at the event.
