THE Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has officially sworn-in Delta State Solicitor-General, Omamuzo Erebe and 56 other legal practitioners as Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs).
The ceremony, which was held on Monday at the Supreme Court Complex, Abuja, also marked the commencement of the 2025/2026 legal year.
Speaking during the special court session, Justice Kekere-Ekun described the conferment of the new SAN rank as a moment for “solemn reflection and renewed commitment to the noble calling of Justice.”
She said the SAN title is the highest recognition for legal practitioners in Nigeria and is conferred annually on lawyers in recognition of years of dedicated service, resolute commitment to the rule of law, who have contributed and distinguished themselves in the legal profession.
“The conferment of this rank is a rigorous process, reflecting the high expectations placed upon those who bear the title. It signifies not only professional excellence but also a commitment to ethical conduct and the upholding of the integrity of the legal profession, “she said.
“You have all actively participated in the pre- swearing -in induction programme organised by the Body of the
Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAND), where invaluable insights were shared with you. I urge you to uphold and internalize those principles, so that you may carry this rank with the utmost dignity, grace and sense of responsibility it demands”.
The CJN reminded the SANs that the rank remained a privilege which could be withdrawn if abused, emphasizing that the rank of the SAN is a privilege, not a right.
The CJN also reviewed the performance of the Apex Court in the last legal year, noting progress in clearing case backlogs and other legal reforms.
Among those elevated as Senior Advocates of Nigeria, SANs, were Victor Esiri Akpoguma Esq., Oromena Justice Ajakpovi Esq., Hannibal Egbe Uwaifo Esq. and Adakole Edwin Inegbedu, Esq.; The sole candidate appointed from the academic category is Professor Chima Josephat Ubanyionwu.
