The exciting final event for 2025 came to a conclusion yesterday, as Delta Queens, Asaba emerged the winner of the Grassroots Discovery of Women in Sports
Our correspondent reports that the Grassroots Discovery of Women in Sports was sponsored by Tracy Macwary Foundation and was held at the Stephen Keshi Stadium Asaba yesterday .
The basketball championship saw the best basketball teams from across Nigeria competing for honours.
This edition highlighted the impact of the championship, which had helped shape the lives of girl child through sports. This latest victory cemented Delta Queens position as one of the most successful teams in the tournament’s history. In the Semi finals, Discover Academy Warri, defeated Bayelsa Queens by 24-23 .
Ms Tracy Mcwary of Tracy Mcwary Foundation said that the participants embodied a spirit of competition that the championship fosters. “To every player, coaches, and supporters, your journey here is a testament to your hard work and commitment. I congratulate everyone,” she said.
She also commended them for their dedication to nurturing young talents.
Mcwary reaffirmed the purpose behind the Grassroots Discovery of Women in Sports as an empowerment initiative to lift women off the streets and also encourage women to be productive in the society.
“The Tracy Mcwary Foundation is giving back to the society and the championship programme will also encourage the young girls and also give them hope and a sense of belonging in the society.
“The effort is to discover their strength, showcase their talent, and unlock their full potential. We are not just crowning new champions, we are marking our four years of transformation, purpose, and impact,” Mcwary said.
According to her, through sports, skills such as understanding and managing emotions and behaviours, solving personal and interpersonal problems, building healthy coping strategies, and developing self-esteem and confidence. “This will help the girl child cope with difficulties and build positive relationships, increasing their resilience so that they are better able to deal with life’s challenges,” she said.
The Head Coach of Delta Queens, Benson Aikoroje told NAN that the game was a very tough one, those girls we played against they are always our rivals, though we have more experience than them.
