THE Delta State Police Command has moved swiftly in response to a viral video showing police officers assaulting a young man near the Asaba Specialist Hospital. The disturbing footage, which made rounds on X (formerly Twitter) and other social media platforms on Sunday, sparked public outrage and prompted immediate action from the command.
In a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, strongly condemned the unprofessional conduct of the officers involved and promptly ordered their identification, arrest, and detention at the Command Headquarters, Asaba.
The statement confirmed that the officers have been taken into custody and will face an orderly room trial. The team leader, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, has also been issued a formal query in connection with the incident.
Abaniwonda reiterated the Delta State Police Command’s commitment to upholding human rights and professional policing standards. He assured the public that the erring officers would face the full weight of the law in line with the Police Act and relevant regulations.
“Such conduct by officers under my watch will not be tolerated,” the CP stated, adding that the disciplinary measures taken would serve as a deterrent to others in the force.
He urged all officers and men of the command to carry out their duties with utmost respect for the rights of citizens, as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
The commissioner appealed to members of the public to remain calm and promised that justice would be served. He also encouraged the public to report any misconduct or complaints through the Command’s official control room numbers or social media channels.
