Community Stages Peaceful Protest, Urges Oborevwori, To Intervene In Land Crisis

THE people of Iriama community in Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State, have raised alarm over the activities of an alleged land grabber, calling on the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, the Orodje of Okpe Kingdom and law enforcement agencies to urgently intervene and halt the illegal sale of the community’s lands.

In a peaceful protest held in the community, the leadership of Iriama, including elders, women, youths and residents, described the alleged actions of one Mr. Paul Esobiebi, as unlawful, provocative and a serious threat to the peace and unity of the area. They called on the state government and traditional authorities to step in before the situation escalates.

Speaking to journalists shortly after the protest, the Chairman of Iriama community, Mr. Aghogho Oriosa and the Secretary, Mr. Kojo Esobiebi, expressed the community’s deep dissatisfaction over Mr. Paul Esobiebi’s alleged attempt to sell over 100 hectares of land belonging to various families in the community without their consent.

According to the leaders, the issue began when surveyors were seen measuring lands in the early hours of the day. Upon inquiry, the community discovered that the survey work was allegedly being done on behalf of Mr. Paul Esobiebi, who claimed ownership of large portions of land, including sensitive areas like the community cemetery.

“When we confronted him, he claimed that all the land in Iriama belongs to him,” said Mr. Oriosa. “We want to make it clear that no one has authorized the sale of any land and anyone buying land from him is doing so at their own risk.”

Several residents, including Ufuoma Usele, Mr. John Omamena and Mr. Onome Obie, also accused the alleged land grabber of using security operatives to intimidate and harass community members in a bid to forcefully take over their ancestral land. They called on the government to ensure that the safety and rights of the people are protected.

“Iriama Community is a peaceful place and we want it to remain so. That’s why we are calling on Governor Oborevwori and our revered Orodje of Okpe to come to our aid,” said Mr. Kojo Esobiebi. Other community stakeholders, including Mr. William Idjede and Mr. Anderson Emurobome Afua, echoed similar concerns.

The Iriama community reaffirmed their loyalty to the leadership of Governor Oborevwori and the Orodje of Okpe, noting that both leaders are known for promoting peace and justice. They appealed for swift intervention to stop any further encroachment and restore calm to the area.
