A Chinese national has been arrested in Anambra State for alleged involvement in illegal mining activities.
The suspect, identified as 45-year-old Mr Mu Hua Qiang, a resident of Aguleri, was apprehended by operatives of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA) Brigade during a surveillance operation in the Aguleri axis.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspect had been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for further investigation.
“The Anambra State Police Command, through its operatives attached to the SCID, Awka, on the evening of August 22, 2025, received a suspected illegal Chinese miner from operatives of the OCHA Brigade. His statement has been voluntarily obtained, and he has been placed in lawful custody for further investigation,” Ikenga said. He added that further developments on the case would be communicated in due course.
Illegal mining has become a growing concern in Anambra State, with authorities intensifying efforts to clamp down on unregulated activities that pose both environmental and security risks.
