Catholic faithful at the St. Joseph’s Pro-Cathedral Church, Asaba, Delta State, today, celebrated the 15th memorial anniversary of the late Rt. Rev. Monsignor Christopher Chukwumah, whose legacy of faith, humility, and selfless service remains fresh in the hearts of those he served. He hailed from Umuezei, Asaba, and was the Parish Priest of St. Joseph’s Pro-Cathedral before his demise.
During the memorial Mass, held at the Pro-Cathedral, Rev. Fr. Peter Okafor, in his homily, urged parishioners to emulate the exemplary life of Msgr. Chukwumah, reflecting on how he touched lives.
He said: “The late Rt. Rev. Msgr. Chukwumah was a man of many parts, an enigma who served selflessly and etched his name in the sands of time. He was an institution; even as a priest, he embraced tradition, valued culture, and upheld truth. I am not surprised that the old youths are celebrating him, he gave them life and direction.”
The commemoration drew dignitaries including the 14th Asagba of Asaba, HRM Obi (Prof) Epiphany Azinge, accompanied by his council of chiefs, Catholic priests, led by Rt. Rev. Msgr. Ike Aduba, the Parish Priest of St. Joseph’s Pro-Cathedral, and Very Rev. Fr. Leonard Biachi of St Johnbosco Catholic Church, Asaba.
Others present were members of the Old St. Joseph Catholic Youths, the Knights of St. Mulumba, the Knights of St. John, as well as families, friends, and well-wishers.
At the reception held in the church premises, Rev. Fr. Leonard Biachi welcomed guests, noting that the occasion was not one of mourning but of joyful remembrance.
“We are here to celebrate and rejoice in the legacy of a great father and mentor. Seeing familiar faces here today shows that Msgr. Chukwumah’s legacy remains alive in our hearts. Let us be steadfast and live exemplary lives worth celebrating when our time comes” Biachi admonished.
Mr. Oliver Ononaiwu, an old youth leader, delivered a historical biography of the late Chukwumah’s life, recounting his societal impact, fight against social vices and tribalism, advocacy for justice for women, engagement of the youths, and efforts to strengthen cultural values.
Also, Mrs. Roseline Ochugbua, aged 88, fondly recalled his unwavering stand for truth, regardless of circumstances, and his favorite songs that emphasized truth as the foundation of a good life.
