Akpoveta Advocates Mandatory Health Insurance Registration for Deltans

By Jumai Nwachukwu

As Delta State prepares to celebrate its 34th anniversary, the Director-General of the Delta State Contributory Health Commission (DSCHC), Dr. Isaac Akpoveta, has urged the state government to issue an Executive Order mandating all Deltans to register in the state health insurance scheme.

Dr. Akpoveta made the appeal during an interview with officials of the Delta State Ministry of Information, who visited his office to review the Commission’s achievements over the past two years.

He explained that compulsory enrollment would guarantee access to quality healthcare for every resident, reduce out-of-pocket medical expenses, and strengthen the state’s health system.

Highlighting the scheme’s achievements, the DG noted significant progress in expanding coverage, improving service delivery, and enhancing health outcomes for enrollees, while stressing that universal participation is essential for long-term success.

Reiterating the Commission’s commitment to ensuring equal treatment for all enrollees, he mentioned that, Service Quality Monitors have been deployed to all registered health facilities, pharmacies, and laboratories to oversee the quality of services provided by healthcare providers.

Akpoveta added that the state government’s overarching goal is to make quality healthcare accessible to all Deltans and residents of the state.

“Every government must ensure that all citizens have access to quality healthcare because it is a fundamental human right, not a privilege,” he emphasised.

While applauding the State Government for his commitment in the health sector, the DG reaffirmed the Commission’s dedication to achieving inclusive healthcare coverage for all, underscoring the need for proactive government policies to safeguard public health.
