Begins Recruitment of Over 700 Med, Non-Med Workers

BY PATRICK MGBODO/JUMAI NWACHUKWU
Delta State Government has commenced the recruitment of over 700 medical and non-medical personnel for deployment across state-owned health facilities following the expansion of its health sector.

Addressing journalists today in Asaba, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Joseph Onojaeme, stressed that the recruitment exercise, approved by the state Governor, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, would be based on merit.

According to Dr Onojaeme, approval was given for the recruitment of 295 medical and non-medical personnel at the Hospitals Management Board (HMB), and 120 medical and non-medical staff at the Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH), Oghara.

At the newly-established College of Health Technology, Ovrode, approval was given for the employment of 100 staff, while 120 staff would be employed at the Delta State Contributory Health Commission (DSCHC) and 60 staff at the Asaba Specialist Hospital (ASH), Asaba.

‘’We have a stable workforce in the state, but these approvals are because of the expansion of the health sector in the state. Before now, there was no public health laboratory in the state, but currently, we are establishing one in the state, and it is near completion.

‘’So, we need the human resources to man that facility. The same thing applies to the new psychiatric hospital we are building in the state. It is because of this expansion that the Governor graciously approved the employment of over 700 medical and non-medical personnel in the health sector.

‘’We need manpower to handle the high-end medical facilities that the state government is procuring. The state government recently procured three Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans that are not helium dependent. So, we need experienced manpower to man those state-of-the-art medical facilities’’ he said.

Reeling out the various cadres of employment, the health commissioner said it covers medical consultants, senior medical officers, senior nursing officers, nursing officers, assistant nursing officers, pharmacists and pharmacist technicians as well as medical laboratory scientists and medical laboratory technicians.

Others include health record officers and technicians, radiographers, optometrists, opticians, physiotherapists, dental technologists, hospital administrators, accountants, auditors, health assistants, health attendants, cleric officers and more.

‘’The Ministry is in the process of advertising for these positions, and it will be strictly on merit. Therefore, prospective applicants should look out for the national and local dailies from tomorrow (today) so that they can apply.

‘’We want the best, and that is why we are standing on merit to fill vacancies in the health sector so that our people can benefit,’’ Dr Onojaeme said, adding that the employment opportunities are open to all Nigerians.
