Breakfast With Mr. Speaker

Long time ago, it was held that “all work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy.”

This is indeed, an age-long truism. It means that if a person does not take time off from work, he or she will become both bored and boring.

I have heard this age-long maxim a million times, particularly as a toddler. But the reality of the proverb became explicit to me and, perhaps, to some of my colleagues in the pen-pushing business as the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Mr Nkem Nwaeke recently, gave us a surprise treat.

The date was Monday, December 22, 2025 and the venue was the private residence of the host and, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Mr. Nkem Nwaeke.

It was indeed, an informal setting. All the paraphernalia of a legislature was absent; there was no mace, no gavel neither was there any Order paper. There was certainly no need for any point of order, yet, everything was in order.

The venue was a breathtakingly beautiful space that exudes elegance and sophistication. As one steps in, one was immediately struck by the stunning decor that surrounded him/her. I was not alone at that, everyone that came, had a beautiful memory of the serenity

Arranged in cozy conversation circles, the tables were adorned with crisp, white linens, fine china, and sparkling crystal glasses, adding a touch of refinement and sophistication to the space.

The decor is tasteful and understated, with subtle nods to the venue’s theme and style. There were fresh flowers and greenery arranged throughout the space, adding a pop of color and fragrance to the air.

As you look around, you notice the attention to detail that has gone into creating this beautiful space as every element has been carefully considered to create a cohesive and stunning whole.

The overall effect is one of opulence and luxury, a space that makes you feel like you’re in a fairytale or a dream. It’s the perfect setting for a special occasion, a place where memories can be made and cherished for a lifetime.

The entire settings was indeed, convivial as It exudes warmth, hospitality, and a sense of community. It is typical of a space where people come together to share laughter, stories, and good company, as it is welcoming and inclusive.

The decor was cozy and inviting, with comfortable seating, soft lighting, and warm colors that create a sense of relaxation and ease. The air was filled with the aroma of delicious food and drinks, tempting ones taste buds and making ones mouth water.

The atmosphere was lively and engaging, with gentle background music, lively chatter, and the clinking of glasses and utensils on plates. The vibe was casual and laid-back with a high calibre of persons within the media profession. Unlike the previous meet, barely a year ago, this year’s get-together was exclusively for House of Assembly correspondents, and the Chief Press Secretary was holding brief for his boss, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Emomotimi Guwor at whose instance, understandably, the meeting holds.

For some of us, it was the first time visiting the Speaker’s Spokesman at his private residence. Although, we have had several interface with him in his office, within the bowels of the Assembly’s complex, as his doors are always thrown open to receive visitors, but, certainly, not at his residence. Therefore, we could be excused for our unending gaze at some of the appealing interior decor, which, in my assessment, without resort to hyperbole, are indeed masterpiece. It was a breakfast meeting; we were called to eat and drink. Period. But, beyond that, the Speaker had some surprise package, a cow had already laid down its life for the press.

Interestingly and, expectedly too, this resonated a loud applause and excitement from the guests. It was a mix of joy, emotion and excitement. They sang, danced  and praised just as they expressed gratitude to the Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, for what they described as his consistent show of love, magnanimity and respect for the press.

Welcoming the Correspondents, the Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Nkem Nwaeke, commended the media team for their unwavering support and balanced reportage of the activities of the Speaker and the Delta State House of Assembly.

According to him, the Speaker is highly satisfied with the performance of the Assembly Correspondents in projecting the office of the Speaker and the legislative arm of government.

“The Speaker has repeatedly expressed his appreciation for your professionalism and dedication. As his Chief Press Secretary, I assure you that I will continue to carry everyone along and sustain this synergy for the overall good of the Assembly,” Nwaeke stated.

Recalling his years as a journalist with Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS), Warri, where he covered the Government House and later the State Assembly, Nwaeke pledged to remain a bridge between the Speaker’s office and the press corps.

“Having walked this path as a reporter, I understand the challenges. I am committed to ensuring that no one is left behind and that our relationship continues to thrive on mutual respect and cooperation,” he added.

The CPS commended the Correspondents for their resilience and courage, expressing optimism that the future holds greater opportunities for the media profession.

Leader of the group, Mr. Andrew Ikehi of The Pointer Newspaper commended the Speaker for recognising the vital role of the media in democratic governance and for fostering a cordial working relationship with journalists covering the Assembly.

“Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor has consistently demonstrated that he values the media as partners in progress. His encouragement and support have boosted our morale and strengthened our resolve to continue discharging our duties professionally,” Ikehi said.

One after another, members of the Assembly press crew including Emmanuel Okoro (DRTV News Cameraman), Mercy Neme (News Agency of Nigeria), Franklin Igrigri (DBS Asaba Cameraman) and Favour Okafor (DBS Asaba Reporter) took turns to express heartfelt appreciation to the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor for his constant show of love and recognition of their diligent service in the House.

They collectively prayed for God’s continued strength, wisdom and guidance for Rt. Hon. Guwor as he pilots the affairs of the Delta State House of Assembly.

Other speakers, including Austin Akanigha (Information), Mr. Godfrey Nzekwe (NTA Reporter), Peter Ogege (DRTV News Reporter), MaryJane Agemomen (Quest TV) and Ifeanyi Chukwuji, commended Mr. Nwaeke for his team spirit, resilience and camaraderie, describing him as a unifying force within the Assembly media family.

The wife of the CPS, Mrs. Mary Efekhoba Nwaeke, was equally celebrated as members of the Delta State Assembly Correspondents showered encomiums on the amiable lady for her warmth, esteem support, gifts and hospitality towards the team.

The event climaxed with feasting, laughter and goodwill, as the Correspondents and their host, Mr Nkem Nwaeke made merry in a symbolic celebration of Christmas and the New Year, reinforcing the bond between the Delta State House of Assembly and the media.
