Accountants in Delta State under the auspices of Delta State Forum of Accountants, today in Asaba, joined other members of the accounting profession across the globe to commemorate the 2025 World Accountants Day, which is observed annually on November 10.

This year, the Delta State Forum of Accountants, which is the umbrella body of accountants in the state, marked the day with a road walk, that took them from Prof. Chike Edozien Secretariat, along Mariam Babangida Way, through Okpanam Road, down to Inter Bau Roundabout, from where they took a turn back to the state secretariat. The accountants, who turned out in large numbers in their branded T-shirts, walked briskly, with lively music to dance to while they shared jokes, laughter and pleasantries, making the road walk a memorable one.

Leading the walk was the Accountant-General of Delta State, Mr. Innocent Okubor, who radiated so much energy and commitment to the celebration and was with them throughout the road walk, as well as the Acting Chairman of Delta State Forum of Accountants, Mrs. Prisca Idama who ensured that the planning and organization of the event was of high standard and that it was successfully executed, making it hitch-free event and one to remember.

Those present included the Honourable Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr. Sonny Ekedayen, who addressed the accountants after the road walk, calling on them to continue to carry out their duties as expected, assuring that the state government is solidly behind them. Others were Chairman of Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), Mrs. Victoria Omarmerhi-Chukwurah, Ex-officio of Delta State Forum of Accountants, Mr. Amechi Bayem, Mr. Morgan Odiwe, the PRO of Delta State Forum of Accountants, Mr. Charles Bonaventure Omovo CNA, among others.

The theme of this year’s celebration was “Embracing the Future: Powering a New Era of Accountants, Education and Practice.” The theme was aimed at encouraging members to remain accountable and professional in their work.

Speaking during the event, the Accountant-General of Delta State, Mr. Innocent Okubor, said that the celebration was held to showcase the importance of accountants in every organization. According to him, no organization can succeed without accountants because they are responsible for keeping financial records, providing financial advice and ensuring that the organization makes profit. “Without proper advice and record keeping, no organization can survive. Accountants play a vital role in achieving organizational or governmental goals and maintaining transparency in all financial dealings”, Okubor said.

Okubor noted that the accounting profession has been in existence since Biblical times, as the word “account” was mentioned in the Bible. He stated that accountants have every reason to celebrate themselves because their work is essential in all sectors.

He also stressed the need for continuous learning and professional development, saying that the world is advancing fast and accountants must remain up to date. “If we remain stagnant, we will not make any impact in the workplace. We need to develop our capacity, maintain accuracy and uphold integrity at all times”, the AG said. He further encouraged accountants to showcase their importance and contribution to society, noting that accountants are essential everywhere. “You can survive without a doctor or an engineer, but not without an accountant. Accounting is a universal profession”, he added.

In an interview, the Acting Chairman of Delta State Forum of Accountants, Mrs. Idama Prisca, explained that the road walk was part of their efforts to create awareness about the significance of the day. “We came out today because it is International Accountants Day. We want people to know the importance of accountants and the role we play in promoting accountability and good governance”, Idama said.

When asked about the state of the accounting profession in Delta State, Mrs. Prisca Idama said they are doing well and that the Accountant General of the state, Mr. Innocent Okubor has been supportive of both ICAN and ANAN members.

She also explained the impact of accountability in society, saying that everyone must be able to give a proper account of the resources entrusted to them. “Accountability means openness and accuracy. Every book of account should reflect transparency, according to the principles of accounting”, Idama said.
