By Ebi Nieketien

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori yesterday asserted that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) remained pivotal to Nigeria’s quest for meaningful national integration and sustainable development.

Speaking at the opening and swearing-in ceremony of the 2025 Batch ‘B’ Stream II Orientation Course at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Issele-Uku, Oborevwori, who was represented by the Commissioner for Special Projects, Bar. Funyei Manager, described the scheme as an enduring vehicle for national unity, as well as a platform for instilling values of good citizenship and leadership in Nigerian youths.

The governor congratulated the corps members on the successful completion of their academic programmes, urging them to embrace the values of patriotism, discipline, service, and integrity that the orientation exercise seeks to instill.

“As young people, you are not just the leaders of tomorrow, but indeed leaders of today. The NYSC remains pivotal to our quest for national integration and sustainable development, as demonstrated by the invaluable contributions of corps members in different sectors across the nation.

‘’The scheme continues to promote ideals such as dedicated service to the nation, constructive engagement, patriotism, equity, justice, the fear of God, and an unwavering commitment to the common good.

He encouraged the new corps members to serve with commitment and ingenuity, providing innovative solutions to the needs of their host communities during their one-year national service.

While assuring them of the state government’s commitment to their safety and welfare, Oborevwori advised the corps members to remain vigilant and avoid bad company amid the country’s security challenges.

The State NYSC Coordinator, Mr. John Kwaghe, in his address, disclosed that a total of 1,532 prospective corps members had been registered.

Kwaghe lauded the corps members for demonstrating “commendable discipline, maturity, and enthusiasm” since their arrival, describing the orientation programme as a critical platform for instilling values of patriotism, character building, and nation-building.

While expressing gratitude to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his administration’s support to the NYSC, particularly the approval for the reconstruction of the camp’s fallen perimeter fence, Kwaghe highlighted other pressing challenges facing the scheme in the state.

He called for the immediate commencement and completion of the perimeter fence to forestall vandalization, the provision of an ambulance for the Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD) programme, and the allocation of an official vehicle for the State Coordinator.
