The remains of late Chief Cletus Agbede Mutu, 72, will be laid to rest on August 9 at the family compound in Akugbene community, Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State.
According to a statement signed by Chief Fidelis Mutu and Bomieghan Mutu, for the family and children, respectively, a funeral mass will be held at St. Xavier Catholic Church, Akugbene community, for the repose of the soul the elder statesman.
“Mutu was a devoted Christian known for championing peace, unity, love, and harmony, as well as fostering a spirit of neighbourliness to achieve Godly success for individuals and families. His unwavering dedication to the development of his community and the growth of its people will remain a legacy worthy of emulation.”
Born in Akugbene, Mutu began his education at Awobu Primary School, graduating in 1967. In 1975, he pursued further studies in the United Kingdom, earning a Red Seal Diploma in Salesmanship from the National School of Salesmanship, Manchester.
His professional career spanned notable roles, including National Deputy Secretary of the Nigerian Brewers and Distillers Cooperative Association, Ararome, Apapa, Lagos, Teacher with the Kogi Local Schools Management Board in the then Kwara State, and Secretary of the Nigeria Road Transport Workers Union (NURTW), Konto-Karfe, Lokoja.
After many years in Kogi State, Chief Mutu returned to his hometown, where he was elected Chairman of Akugbene Community for one year, earning admiration for his fairness and justice. Recognising his conflict-resolution skills, the Delta State Government appointed him President of the Ogoeze Customary Court for three consecutive terms.
In appreciation of his contributions, the Akugbene-Mein Traditional Chiefs Council conferred on him the chieftaincy title of ‘’Bebe-Are-Owei ‘’of Akugbene-Mein Kingdom.
