Floods: Delta Govt Desilts Anwai River

BY EBI NIEKETIEN/TEJIRI EDAFE

AS part of its proactive measures to mitigate the impact of flooding, the Delta State Government, yesterday, commenced the de-silting of Anwai River in Asaba, reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability and public safety.

Speaking during the flag-off of the de-silting exercise, the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ejiro Jamani, emphasized the strategic importance of the Anwai River, describing it as a vital channel that collects floodwater from various parts of Asaba and drains it into the River Niger.

According to him, “Flood is a disaster but when you are intentional about your people, you proffer solution to think of how you can nip it in the bud. We are trying to nip it in the bud before the heavy rains will come.

‘’This area is like a collecting point where the water in Asaba gather and travel to the river Niger. This place is heavily silted. That is why the swamp-buggy is here to open it up for free flow of water. When this is finished, water from heavy rains will flow easily.

‘’We have fish famers doing business here. However, when this place is seriously silted, water will overwhelmed the farmers and they will lose their investment’’ he stated.

In addition to the Anwai River, the commissioner disclosed that similar flood control operations were ongoing in other parts of Asaba, including Iyiabi and Akakpo. These efforts, he said, were aimed at preventing water overflow that could displace residents during the peak of the rainy season.

Jamani also expressed concern over the persistent blockage of drains due to indiscriminate waste disposal by residents. He revealed that while the state government had conducted sensitization campaigns, it was now moving into full enforcement mode.

“We are clearing clogged drains, many of which are filled with debris and waste dumped by residents. Some people even go as far as channeling their waste directly into the drainage when it rains. Anyone caught in this act will face the full wrath of the law,” he warned.

The Commissioner further revealed that the storm-water drainage project, which was a major component of the state’s flood control plan, had seen six of its eight phases completed, noting that approval for the final two phases has been granted, which when completed, would bring an end to flooding in the state.

While commending Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his unflinching commitment towards mitigating the effect of flooding in the state, he urged Deltans to continue to support and collaborate with the state government to ensure a sustainable environment.
