AS the rains intensifies, officials of the Delta State Waste Management Board has intensified efforts at evacuating wastes along the Koka flyover and other areas in the state capital.
The officials were also at the Marian Babangida Junction, the ever-busy Asaba – Benin express way as well as the old dump site to cleared up wastes.
The waste evacuation exercise, a directive by the Board Chairman, Hon Matthew Edema was part of efforts by the board to ensure that the State capital remained clean, thereby preventing any form of blockage of drains during rainfall.
Supervisor of the exercise, Evelyn Orisewezie disclosed that the waste evacuation exercise became necessary as a result of the negligence of some residents who failed to comply with simple waste management practices.
Orisewezie noted that the Chairman of the Waste Management Board, in line with the More Agenda of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, was committed to ensuring proper collection and disposal of waste across the State in order to ensure a cleaner, greener and healthier environment.
She urged residents and motorists in the State to shun the habit of disposing waste indiscriminately but rather, continue to collaborate with the Board by ensuring proper waste management practices were maintained, tasking them to always engage the services of Private Sector Participants (PSPs) for proper waste management.
“As a Board vested with the responsibility of waste management in Delta State, we are not resting on our oars as regards effective waste management. This is because we are working in line with the MORE Agenda of our amiable Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to ensure a clean and healthy environment”.
“We are also using this opportunity to appeal to residents in the State to engage the services of PSPs for proper waste management rather than disposing waste indiscriminately because anyone caught will face the wrath of the law,” Evelyn said.
