Global Disability Green Initiative Empowers PWDs As Green Leaders

AS part of initiative to drive inclusive climate action by equipping PWDs with skills in clean energy, entrepreneurship, and sustainable development, the Global Disability Green Initiative (GDGI) has launched a transformative plan to empower 10,000 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) as green leaders by 2030 in Nigeria.

GDGI unveiled its plan at the launch of this initiative at Room 321 House of Representatives, National Assembly Complex, Abuja to train PWDs in solar photovoltaic installation, entrepreneurship, and other sustainable practices.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman, House Committee on Disability Matters, Dr. Bashiru Dawodu represented by Hon. Oluwatoyin Fayinka, reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities Act of 2018 and pledged support for the GDGI initiative.

The Founder and Initiator, GDGI, Mrs. Angelina Ugben expressed commitment to empowering PWDs and promoting inclusive climate action.

The South-South Coordinator, GDGI, Mr. Thomas Undie, emphasized the need for the organization to be duly recognized and play greater role in the Niger Delta region. He noted that the region, being a hub of oil exploration and activity, is disproportionately affected by climate change, which further exacerbates the challenges faced by PWDs.

On his part, the Delta State Coordinator, GDGI, Samson Oguwewo, also highlighted the importance of embracing the Global Disability Green Initiative in the State and noted that the initiative will help reduce carbon emissions, which have a significant impact on PWDs in the State.

As the initiative moves forward, it is expected to make a significant impact on the lives of PWDs in Nigeria, promoting inclusive development and sustainable practices. With the support of government agencies, NGOs, and other stakeholders, GDGI is poised to achieve its goal of empowering 10,000 PWDs as green leaders by 2030.

The initiative which has received support from government officials and stakeholders, recognize the importance of promoting the rights and welfare of PWDs.

Notable milestones achieved so far by GDGI included: the planting of 50 symbolic trees, training of 25 PWDs in solar PV installation and the distribution of 100 solar lamps to students in underserved communities.
