Following the deplorable state of Effurun/ Sapele Road in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State, some Deltans have called on the State and Federal Governments to effect repairs of the road to ameliorate the sufferingS of the people (motorists and pedestrians). Speaking to newsmen on the state of the road, yesterday, many motorists said their vehicles damaged on the road for the past four days, adding that they have been passing through untold hardship.
A young commercial tricycle rider, Mr. Okoro Monday, said the frustration was much, adding that an attempt for two vehicles to manoeuvre their way, was munsuccessul as they fell on each other leading to the death of two persons.
According to him, the state of the road had caused pain and sufferings to the who had experinced hardships due to the bad economy. His words: “Food is very costly yet, there is no road to pass, and many of the traders’ goods have spoilt. Many of the traders here cannot sell their goods because no road for buyers to pass to buy.”
On the part of the traders, who included Mr. Moses Tobore, Uche Okonkwo and others, they said for the past four days, many of the vehicles have been stuck on the road, neither any vehicles coming in nor any one going out. In separate interviews, three traders lamented how the state of the road had affected their businesses.
They complained bitterly that there had been low patronage as there is no road for customers to pass to purchase their goods, leading to damaged goods.
One of the traders said:” For the past four days, we have not been selling our goods. All the goods we have bought, we have not been able sell them”.
They appealed to the state and Federal governments to tar the road as they were already tensed up with the harsh economy in the country. Others, who spoke in the same vein, said if the Federal Government cannot help, the state government can do the needful by carrying out the road repairs to ameliorate the sufferings of the people.
