The Anambra State Police Command has launched a manhunt for a gunrunning suspect identified only as Chukwuebuka, also known as “Nwa Onitsha”.
The police say he is linked to an illegal weapons syndicate operating within the state.
The police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the operation in a statement issued in Awka over the weekend.
According to Ikenga, officers from the ‘B Division’ of the command, acting on credible intelligence, raided a suspected criminal hideout in the early hours of April 29 at the Iyiagu Estate in Awka.
During the operation, three male suspects, Paulinus Nkuda, Nwankwo Emmanuel, and Nwadede Godspower, were apprehended.
In addition to the arrests, a locally made revolver pistol and substances believed to be hard drugs were seized. The detained suspects have reportedly claimed that the pistol belonged to Chukwuebuka, who is currently on the run.
The police spokesperson further stated that the case has been transferred to the Anti-Kidnapping and Rapid Response Unit for further investigation.
Ikenga assured that the authorities would pursue the fugitive and bring him to justice.
