SENATE Minority Leader Abba Moro has dismissed suggestions that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) must form a coalition or merge with other opposition parties to remain competitive in the 2027 general elections.
Moro said the PDP remains a strong, nationwide political force despite the mass exodus from the party.
Speaking on television, Moro responded to speculations surrounding potential alliances ahead of the polls, especially in light of recent comments by some PDP governors who have distanced themselves from coalition talks.
Moro said, “I’ve said it before, PDP is a big brand. If you go to every nook and cranny of Nigeria today, you will find PDP members. Even without a coalition or merger, the PDP can contest and be competitive in the next election.
“If there’s going to be a coalition, that’s fine. But if it’s a merger that requires dropping the PDP name entirely, then that’s a dangerous path. The PDP brand is strong and resonates across the country. It’s capable of winning elections in its own right. Retaining the name is crucial,” he added.
House of Reps: Three opposition lawmakers dump parties, formally join APC
Three opposition members of the House of Representatives have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress [APC].
Their defections were announced yesterday during the plenary.
The lawmakers include Oluwole Oke from Osun State, a former member of the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] and two lawmakers from Kano State, Kabiru Hassan Rumrum and Sani Abdullahi, both elected via the New Nigeria Peoples Party [NNPP].
Rumrum had earlier declared his resignation from the NNPP and his return to the APC during a meeting with the party’s National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
Similarly, Oke earlier announced his resignation from the PDP in Osun State and his decision to join the ruling party.
Their defections were formally announced by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen at Thursday’s plenary.
The latest defection brings the total number of lawmakers who have switched parties since the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly to 30.
Of the 30 defectors, 27 have joined the ruling party from the PDP, Labour Party, African Democratic Congress [ADC] and the NNPP.
