As Christians across the country gathered a various churches for the first Sunday of the year, clerics were upbeat that Nigeria will be great again and urged worshippers to fervently prayed to God to change the tide of things in the country for  the better.

At the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Unity Model Parish, Asaba the inaugural Sunday service of 2026, featured a live stream broadcast from the church’s national headquarters at 1-9 Redemption Way, Ebute Metta, Lagos.

The service, which drew a large congregation, centered on themes of divine mercy and thanksgiving, with the General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, delivering a message titled “Mercies of the Lord.”

Drawing from Psalm 89:1, which states, “I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations,” Pastor Adeboye emphasized the importance of recognizing God’s faithfulness amid life’s uncertainties.

“Whenever something is important to David, he always uses the singular. For instance, when he says ‘the Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want,’ he’s saying ‘I don’t know about you, but I know about myself – the Lord is my Shepherd’. So I want you to take this message as personal,” he stated.

The cleric urged the faithful to reflect on personal testimonies of survival and provision from the previous year, framing 2026 as an opportunity for renewed commitment to divine praise.

“Concerning Nigeria, the prophecies are in two parts. I’m not sure I want to share the second part. I will pray more about that, if God gives the go ahead I may share the second part on Friday. But for now, one of the things He told me is that this year there will be a reduction in hunger. Small and medium enterprises will begin to blossom,” he declared.

In a striking prediction, the General Overseer prophesied what he termed “reverse ‘japa’,” suggesting that many Nigerians who had travelled abroad seeking better opportunities would return home.

According to him, “In Genesis 22 vs 1-13, Abraham trusted God for sacrifice when he was asked to go and sacrifice his son and at the verge, God surprised him with what is to be used for the sacrifice.

“Many trust in the horses and chariots but they the put their trust in their God will not be disappointed even as our Christians is tested.

Father Nwulo stated that Christ’s birth in a manger is not a coincidence but God’s plan from the beginning to redeem man from sin and also signifying the humility of Jesus Christ.

“The birth of Jesus in a manger shows that he is a might priest who came to offer himself as a leaving sacrifice for the good and salvation of mankind. He is, The Lamb of God who came to offer himself to prevent man from dying eternal death”.

He said that today’s Christians are not taking dominion over principalities and power because they are not given to a life of prayer and fasting. Which he said is as a result of being lazy in spiritual matters.

He enjoined believers to get involved in prayer and fasting even as the Winners family is set to commence its annual 21 days of prayer and fasting for 2026 beginning on Monday 5th to Sunday 25th, January 2026.

He said that prayer and fasting established our dominion on earth no matter the circumstances. Numerous benefits and good tidings are hidden in prayer and fasting which few privileged Christians are enjoying.
